Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear to my appointment?

Above all, you should be physically and emotionally comfortable in the clothes you wear to your session. Some modalities (VAT) are experienced fully clothed, while others (integrative massage) are performed with the client disrobed according to their comfort level. Some clothing choices however, like jeans and other work wear, are not particularly conducive to an effective session. Rest assured that we conduct ourselves with the highest degree of professionalism, and you are only exposed to the extent necessary for effective treatment.

What can I expect on my first visit?

First and foremost, a kind and welcoming environment! TheBodyKneads shares offices and works in conjunction with master herbalist Laurie Bechler of Optimum Health and Wellness. You will be quickly greeted by our reception staff and asked to fill out some brief paperwork outlining a bit about who you are and why you’ve come to us. The more we know about you, the better we are able to serve you!

Afterwards, your therapist will bring you into the private studio and conduct a brief interview with you to determine what therapy will best meet your unique needs.

What is muscle response testing (MRT)?

Muscle response testing is one method by which your therapist will determine which modality is right for you. Another name for MRT is applied kinesiology. First used by chiropractors in the 1960s, applied kinesiology is now frequently used by holistic therapists as means evaluating various aspects of health through neuromuscular response. If you’d like to know more about how it works, just ask!

What will my vibroacoustic therapy (VAT) session be like?

Unless it is performed in combination with an integrative massage, a VAT session is experienced fully clothed, with little physical interaction with your therapist. You will be asked to lie on the massage table either face up or face down and relax. If one of Dr. Thompson’s protocols is chosen, you will experience the therapy in conjunction with his brainwave entrainment compositions via headphones. When experiencing Olav Skille’s protocols, you will experience the therapy with ambient music chosen by your therapist.

What is experienced emotionally, intellectually, or spiritually during the treatment varies greatly from person to person. Sometimes the experience can be deeply intense, resulting in a great outpouring of emotion. Others may leave the experience feeling exhilarated, ready to take on the next challenge. Or, one might leave the experience feeling very little, only to later find themselves thinking more clearly about a thorny subject that was lingering in the back of their minds.

ALL of these responses are legitimate and normal for VAT. Because of this, your therapist may stay in the room or check on you throughout the session, to ensure the most comfortable experience possible. Occasionally clients have expressed feeling a sense of disorientation following a therapeutic session. Because of this, we encourage taking a few minutes after you have finished to drink some water and come back to yourself before leaving our offices.

Why do you limit 60-minute sessions to site specific, area focused massage?

We have this policy because we want you to get best result possible from the time you spend with us. At TheBodyKneads, we firmly believe that 60 minutes is not enough time to perform a truly beneficial whole body massage.  However, it is enough time to give focused, quality attention to a specific area.
